THE PENIS

The penis is the male's reproductive sex organ. It also serves as the male's organ of urination. The penis is made up of several component parts. At the end is a bulbous shape called the glans penis. The glans is covered with a loose fold of skin called the foreskin. When the penis becomes erect, the foreskin retracts to expose the glans. The area on the underside of the penis where the foreskin is attached is called the frenulum, or frenum.
The urethra passes through the penis. The urinary opening, or meatus, is at the tip of the penis glans. Both urine and ejaculated semen pass through the urethra. The ejaculatory ducts join the urethra inside the prostate gland.
Penis erection is the stiffening of the penis during sexual arousal. This makes it easier for the penis to enter a vagina or an anus. Penis erection is caused by engorgement of the penis by blood. Dilation of the arteries allows more blood to fill the spongy erectile tissue chambers within the penis. This causes the penis to lengthen and stiffen.
Orgasm causes the ejaculation of semen from the penis via muscular contractions. Penis stimulation is the main cause of orgasm, although prostate stimulation can have the same affect. This allows some men to orgasm when another man places his erect penis into his anus.
